Respiration is the release of energy from food

The process of respiration can be summarized like this:

Sugar (glucose) + Oxygen –> carbon dioxide + water + energy

C6H12O6 + 602 –> 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy

Respiration occurs inside the mitochondria in a cell

Two Kind of Respiration
1.Aerobic Respiration = respiration that use oxygen
2.Anaerobic Respiration = respiration that not use oxygen

Similarities (Kesamaan)
Energy released by breakdown of sugar

Differences
Aerobic
– use oxygen
– no alcohol or lactic acid made
– large amount of energy released

Anaerobic
– do not use oxygen
– alcohol or lactic acid made
– small amount of energy released

Air is taken down into the lungs
Nose -> larynx -> trachea -> bronchus -> bronchiole -> alveoli

Gaseous exchange occurs at alveoli
Breathing (Ventilation) is muscular movements which keep the gaseous exchange surface supplied with oxygen

Breathing in is called inspiration, and breathing out is called expiration
When breathing in, the muscles of the diaphragm contract. And when breathing out the muscles of the diaphragm relax.

Cigarette smoking damages lungs and heart
– Nicotine is addictive this means that once your body has got use to it, it is very hard to do without it
– Tar increases the chances of getting lung cancer
– Carbon monoxide cuts down oxygen supply
